Weigh Up Epithetical Books Lily's Crossing
This is a wonderful story set in the mid-40s just towards the end of World War II. Lily is a young girl with a huge imagination and a bad habit of lying. Her mother died when she was little and she is being raised by her father and her grandmother. For a girl in America, the war seems far away and doesn't affect her until her father joins the army and is shipped overseas. When she meets Albert, a refugee from Hungary, she learns first hand how war can affect a family. I love how the author

I really enjoyed this coming of age story that explored the relationships with family and friends, told from the point of view of a 11 year old girl during World War II. I thought that the character development was excellent. Sometimes the plot moved a little slowly, but it really picked up towards the end and ended beautifully and emotionally. I would recommend this book to children aged 10 and up. I will definitely use this book when I do historical fiction book clubs with my students.

I was disappointed with this. Having enjoyed a number of Patricia Reilly Giff's other books and this being a Newbery Award winner, I was hoping it would be great. It was just ok. The main character is difficult to like - she is a liar and a disrespectful brat. She does mature some over the books but not as much as I would like. Also, the word "damn" is used several times. Because she has been looking forward to it so long, I am letting my 10 year old read it for school as part of our WWII

I read this with my pre-teen daughter. It offered a good opportunity to share a world that she wasn't familiar with (neither am I!) revolving around world war, fear of loss, black-outs, etc. A sweet story involving unexpected friendship and personal growth.

Madisen loaned it to me because I had nothing else to read!
