Rendition In Favor Of Books Chasing Fire
Little else in life is as dangerous as fire jumping. Flying past towering pillars of smoke, parachuting down to the edge of an all-consuming blaze, shoveling and sawing for hours upon hours, days at a time, all to hold the line and push back against the raw power of Mother Nature. But there's also little else as thrilling - at least to Rowan Tripp. The Missoula smoke jumpers are one of the most exclusive fire-fighting squads in the nation, and the job is in Rowan's blood: her father is a legend in the field. She's been fighting fires since her eighteenth birthday. At this point, returning to the wilds of Montana for the season feels like coming home - even with reminders of the partner she lost last season still lingering in the air.
Fortunately, this year's rookie crop is among the strongest ever - and Gulliver Curry's one of the best. He's also a walking contradiction, a hotshot firefighter with a big vocabulary and a winter job at a kid's arcade. He came to Missoula to follow in the footsteps of Lucas "Iron Man" Tripp, yet he's instantly more fascinated by his hero's daughter. Rowan, as a rule, doesn't hook up with other smoke jumpers, but Gull is convinced he can change her mind. And damn if he doesn't make a good case to be an exception to the rule.
Everything is thrown off balance, though, when a dark presence lashes out against Rowan, looking to blame someone for last year's tragedy. Rowan knows she can't complicate things with Gull - any distractions in the air or on the ground could be lethal. But if she doesn't find someone she can lean on when the heat gets intense, her life may go down in flames.

I know I'm biased because I'm a huge Nora Roberts fan, but it's a rare day that she writes a book that I don't really enjoy. This year's hardcover release, "Chasing Fire," was no exception. I was hooked into this book pretty quick.Series Note:No series connections.Summary:Fire season is approaching Missoula, Montana and smoke-jumper Rowan Tripp is returning to base to prepare for the physical demands to come. But this year, coming back isn't as easy after losing her jump partner the year before.
I've been on a re-reading spree recently, anyone else try something familiar? Nora Roberts explores new territory with this one. She introduces you to the brave, dangerous world of smoke jumpers and you can see the action unfold.Rowan was tough, loyal and guarded.Gulliver Curry was charming, clever, strong with bottomless patience. And romantic.Somehow he made me think of gentle giants, instant noodles and spicy food. The murders in this book were, personal, brutal and the crew was full of

This was one subject that I have never read about before and wasn't sure how I would like it, but since it was written by Nora Roberts, it had to be good. It was! You get to see how intense a wildfire is from the smoke jumpers perspective, rather than a news segment. It shows just how much work and dedication these people live with every day. I just didn't want to figure the twist out so soon. It was great as always though with wonderful characters and their relationships.
Edited to add: I listened to the audiobook version of this novel, and I should have said this: what a great narrator. Good differentiation of one character from another, and no straining to sound male -- she just pulls it off.I've read a lot of Nora Roberts' novels -- with the exception of the fantasy and paranormal titles, which just are not my proverbial cup of tea. A lot of her books blend together for me, which means that they were less than compelling or memorable. Not bad, mind you. Just
Could I be growing bored with Ms. Roberts? I didn't love the Bridal series, so I have been looking forward to this book. For me, it fell short of my hopes and expectations. As always, the characters were amazing, the detail provided about the job of the jumpers was exquisite, the plot just didn't pull me in. All in all, it was a fun read, the sort of book to take to the beach, it just didn't feel like the Ms. Roberts that I adore, such as Carolina Moon, Black Hills and The Search.
3.5 stars. The solution to the puzzle was predictable but oh, I felt for the smoke jumpers. The setting is truly immersive, the heat, the danger, the camaraderie. The female lead in particular is well-rounded and interesting and both storytelling and prose are good. A pleasant read. He looked at her as they crossed to the trailhead. Im all about equal pay for equal work. A firm believer in ability, determination, brains having nothing to do with gender. Im even cautiously open to women players
